A Lesson About Success You Dont Want To Miss
What would you do if you had the opportunity to start up a business and somebody else had the same idea as you, but beat you to it? Nearly twenty years ago this happened to a school teacher you wanted to become an entrepreneur.
James had two options: he could go into competition against his opposition and try and beat them in what would be a fight for a limited market or he could wait to see what he could learn from his competitor and make a decision about what he would do later on.
One year later there was no competition. His competitor had gone out of business. James then decided to start up his business when his competitor had folded. He is still running his business and has been able to set himself up financially for life. He has done what many small businessman long to do, but fail to achieve.
Sometimes it pays to wait to see what will happen and get more insight to what is happening around you, rather than rush headlong into a disaster.
Here is story about a man who decided to look into a franchise opportunity. The franchise was just opening up in a new country and John responded to an advertisement looking for interested parties to have the national rights. As it happened, John was given the first option. After initial discussions, John said he needed to think about it. The following morning the franchise owner contacts him and tells him that the national rights are gone.
Six years later, John decided to buy into one of the suburban franchises for a little less than what he could have purchased the rights to the national franchise. John then spent the next four years working seven days a week to basically earn a wage. Eventually, John burned out and sold out. While looking for something else to do, John daily rued the fact that he didn’t take up the option to buy the national rights when he was given the chance.
What can we learn from James and John?
You might say that James was lucky and John was unlucky.
Ironically, had James decided to take the plunge and try to knock off his competitor, he would have lost all his capital. But had John taken up the option to invest in the national rights to run the franchise, he would not be now be regretting his lost opportunity.
The real difference between these two budding entrepreneurs is James new what he wanted and John wasn’t sure. Not only did James know what he wanted, he had also researched his market and knew there was only sufficient room for one player in his niche.
If you are ready to fulfill your hearts desire, you will have it, because you will see the opportunity when it arises, and even if you think you may have lost it, your opportunity will still be yours.
This is a universal law that was expressed about three thousand years ago with these words, “Cast your bread upon the waters and in many days you will find it.”
